Each year, Elemental Excelerator funds 15-20 companies up to $1 million to improve systems that impact people’s lives. Our Demonstration Track is a project development program that provides startups with project funding, connections to local and global partners, and the means to execute a transformative project to demonstrate the company’s technology.
In highly regulated marketplaces, such as the water sector, demonstration projects are a necessary piece of the commercialization process. Demonstration projects de-risk engagement for the end-use customer and support the emerging company through its critical development stages. Through this process, water companies and their deployment partners gain valuable insights that can transform business models and accelerate technological advancement through the commercialization valley of death.
Kim will share lessons and best practices cultivated from the approximately 60 Demonstration and Equity and Access projects Elemental Excelerator has executed to date. The talk will highlight tangible outcomes and trackable progress made with two growth-stage water companies, Zero Mass Water and Microvi.
Microvi is a wastewater solutions startup. Its most advanced technology removes nitrates, a common and harmful pollutant, by degrading it into harmless nitrogen gas with no biosolid waste. This year, Microvi is installing modular, turnkey treatment systems in disadvantaged California agricultural regions where nitrate contamination is overwhelming the drinking water supply.
Zero Mass Water developed a unique product that uses the power of the sun to make clean drinking water from the air. The company’s SOURCE Hydropanels require no infrastructure and can efficiently operate across a wide range of climates, particularly where water is scarce. Zero Mass Water is working on unique business models to deploy its off-grid drinking water solution to high-need regions around Australia, California and communities in Flint, Michigan.
In addition to gallons of water reused, treated or alternatively sourced, investment towards demonstration projects by corporations, cities, and other deployment partners leads to advancements in business models and technology adoption. The multiplicative impact of these mutually beneficial demonstration projects is what we believe will spur ongoing success in the market.
